O'Neil joined the Canadian Idol third season auditions in the spring of 2005 while she was in high school. She made it to the top 100 round since the judges were impressed by her vocal performances. O'Neil was praised by the jury. But she lost badly in both the Top 10 Week as well as the Top 9 Week of the Finals. The judges were stunned by the results and instructed the crowd to choose contestants similar to Melissa with most impressive singing talent. O'Neil has been consistently delivering stellar performances since then, never finished lower than the three top performers. The judge Werner said, following another two incredible performances, that O'Neil was going to be the winner from her Canadian Idol competition, as well as the first woman and youngest in show history, following the September 7, 2005 finals. O'Neil was immediately contacted from Canadian premier Paul Martin to congratulate her on her win at Canadian Idol.
